Exploration: Shadows and
Light - August 19, 2009
6 hour exploration for 6 to 10 year
olds
9:00am - 3:00pm
$25 per person
Let your summer scientists enter the
mysterious world of shadows and
light. Drop your children off at
DASEF’s Environmental Outpost for a
day of scientific exploration about
light, mirrors, shadows, eclipses,
and creatures of the dark. They will
use our sun tower and sun trackers
to study the movement of the earth,
make models of solar and lunar
eclipses and a shadow clock, learn
how to change the shape and size of
shadows, make shadow animals act out
a story, try out a pinhole camera,
discover how well light travels
through different materials, bend
light around corners and take the
mirror maze challenge, and see a
movie about animal adaptations for
the dark and an animated movie about
bats. Shed some light on science!
Exploration:
Dinosaurs - August 22, 2009
10:00am-12:00pm
$6 per person
Did you ever wish you worked as a
paleontologist for a natural history
museum? You and your child will get
the chance as you try to assemble
our model of a Protoceratops
skeleton and build a 1:10 scale
T-Rex skeleton or a model using a
set of Dinosaur Duplo blocks. You’ll
also search for facts in some cool
dinosaur books, study dinosaur body
parts, assemble a large dinosaur
floor puzzle, and have a chance to
be photographed with our 10-foot
inflatable T-Rex. Bring your camera
along for an exciting morning with
the dinosaurs!
Exploration: Fossils and Minerals
– (September 12, 2009) 10:00 – 12:00 pm
Want to collect rocks (on another
planet?!) or ever wonder how rocks
are formed? You and your child will
see an interactive movie about
mineral and fossil formation and how
minerals are used in everyday life;
play “Find A Mineral”; and view
fluorescent minerals and other
samples from our collection. Use a
rover to search for rocks and
minerals in our Martian landscape.
Take remote control to new heights!
Exploration: Rockets
- (October 17, 2009) 10:00 – 12:00
pm
Build and launch a rocket!
The fee for the Exploration: Rockets
is $15 per child and $5 for
accompanying adult (includes a
rocket kit and all assembly and
launch materials).
Exploration: Inertia and Momentum – (November 21, 2009) 10:00 – 12:00 pm
Ever wonder how forces affect the motion of racing cars and rolling
coasters? You and your child will
make and test a model racecar; learn
about mass, speed, and distance with
various rolling objects; collide
marbles; see a DVD about machines in
motion; and make a track for a
marble roller coaster. Get moving
with us!
Exploration: Snow Flakes – (January 16, 2010) 10:00 – 12:00 pm
Like to catch snowflakes on your
tongue or ever wonder what they
would look like through a
microscope? You and your child will
learn about the composition of
snowflakes and see them through a
microscope, make and project
snowflake designs, and find out
about the life and photography of
“Snowflake Bentley”. Craft your own
decorative thermometer. Winterrific!
Exploration: Penguins
(February 20, 2010)
10:00 – 12:00 pm
Ever wish you could journey to the
Antarctic world of the Emperor
penguins? You and your child will
watch a short film about how the
next generation of penguins is born
into this harshest of environments,
hear a read-aloud of a penguin
story, construct a snowflake from
Lego building pieces, make and take
your own igloo model and penguin
ruler, and learn how to balance as
you compete in the
“Walk-Like-a-Penguin” race. Chilling
good fun!
Exploration: Structures – (March
13, 2010)
10:00 – 12:00 pm
Like to build bridge and tower
models or ever wonder how
engineering makes structures
possible? You and your child will
see a presentation on structure
design, build a bridge model, and do
a bridge stress test. Work in teams
to make a Chaos Tower to send balls
careening, dropping, and curving
through a maze of engineering
marvels. Dynamic!
Six hour Exploration: Scopes - (Wednesday April 7, 2010) 9 am – 3 pm
6 to 10 year-olds
$25 fee per child
Want to let your child see the world
in a whole new way? Drop them off at
DASEF’s Environmental Outpost during
spring break for a day of scientific
exploration of all types of scopes.
They will explore kaleidoscopes
using a tabletop model, learn how
they work by making a geometric
design reflect into infinity and by
making shapes with a flashlight and
mirrors, see a movie of amazing
kaleidoscope designs and make and
take their own kaleidoscope viewer.
They will learn about the history of
periscopes and how they work by
studying angles of incidence and
angles of reflection that enable us
to see around corners, assembling
their own make and take periscope,
and spying on secret messages hidden
around the building. They will also
hand lenses to see the wondrous
detail of insect wings, look at
their fingers through our powerful
microscopes, and see distant objects
with our telescopes. Magnifying,
mesmerizing fun!
Sound All Around – (April 17, 2010) 10:00 – 12:00 pm
Want to be a sound engineer or ever
wonder how sounds are made? You and
your child will discover the
vibration/sound connection, see a
performance of futuristic electronic
music, and try to identify mystery
sounds. Compose your own song using
Boomwhacker sound tubes. Melodic
fun!
Exploration: Greenhouse – (May 13, 2010) 10:00 – 12:00 pm
Want to grow your green thumb in
time for spring planting? You and
your child will study the science
behind the greenhouse effect and
tour our new greenhouse. You will
plant seeds in the greenhouse, get a
sprouted plant in exchange, and make
a soda bottle terrarium, watch a
movie about plants, and study the
inside of a plant stem. Grow a
scientist’s mind!
Exploration: Rockets
– (June 12, 2010) 10:00 – 12:00 pm
Build and launch a rocket!
The fee for the Exploration: Rockets
is $15 per child and $5 for
accompanying adult (includes a
rocket kit and all assembly and
launch materials).
